Halloween is busiest night of year for the Toothfairy

Halloween is just around the corner, and the Toothfairy’s nightmare is about to begin. Believe it or not, Halloween is the busiest night for the Toothfairy, and it marks the beginning of the tooth season. “I know kids will be eating lots of candy, and I am certainly going to have my work cut out for me this year,” remarked the Toothfairy in a recent interview.

She is right. After all, Americans consume approximately 8 billion pounds of candy on an annual basis.

Having recently signed a deal with the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: America’s Toothfairy (NCOHF), the Toothfairy is looking forward to having some help with her other duties. “The Toothfairy has her hands full, and we are happy to join her in the fight against severe tooth decay,” stated Fern Ingber, president and CEO of NCOHF: America’s Toothfairy.

In addition to flying around the country and collecting teeth, she serves as an educator about the importance of oral health, a preventer of pediatric dental disease and a protector of our children.

NCOHF estimates that between now and Halloween the Toothfairy will collect at least 483,405 teeth and travel at least 32.8 million miles each night. Considering the upcoming holiday season, that isn’t likely to drop too much over the next few months. And, then there’s the logistics — transportation, storage, coinage — how does she do it? Superhero or not, with this increased workload, she is going to need some major assistance.

“We may not be able to fly around the country, but we can definitely help,” NCOHF said in a recent press release.

“We all know children learn by example, so we can serve as role models by brushing, flossing and rinsing twice a day and visiting the dentist regularly,” NCOHF said. “We can also support her efforts through Trick or Treat for America’s Toothfairy. This Halloween, rescue children from preventable pain and suffering by clicking on www.AmericasToothfairy.org, setting up your personal virtual fundraising page and encouraging your friends and family to donate to this smile-saving, child-saving cause. NCOHF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to raising awareness of the No. 1 chronic childhood illness: pediatric dental disease, facilitating delivery of comprehensive pediatric oral health services, and eliminating this preventable disease from future generations.

ADA and PopCap Games offer giveaways as alternative to Halloween candy

“Tooth decay is five times more prevalent than asthma and results in more than 51 million hours of missed school each year. Diet plays an important role in oral health. Too much sugar can lead to cavities down the road, which is why the ADA is proud to team up with PopCap on the ‘Stop Zombie Mouth’ campaign,” said Dr. William Calnon, president of the ADA.

“Tooth decay in children is almost entirely preventable,” said Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, ADA spokesperson on pediatric dentistry. “Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and eating a balanced diet can lead to improved oral health and improved overall health. Working collaboratively, we can educate whole families in a fun way about the importance of proper oral health habits.”

“We at PopCap have been interested in the potential for video games to provide benefits beyond entertainment for many years,” said John Vechey, PopCap co-founder and franchise studio director at PopCap. “We’re passionate about the very important cause behind the ‘Stop Zombie Mouth’ campaign and proud to be highlighting yet another positive effect that games can have on society.”

“We usually buy and give away a small mountain of candy at Halloween,” said Liza Geonie of Northport, N.Y., who plays Plants vs. Zombies with her 5-year-old son. “Now we’ll be presenting trick-or-treaters with a choice: a piece of candy or a free video game. We feel great about giving kids a healthier option that’s a ton of fun, and we’re planning on buying MUCH less candy this year!”

The Orange County Children’s Book Festival is in it’s 9th year. In 2011, there were over 125 authors, more than 25 illustrators, dozens of storytellers and great family-oriented entertainers.

The Festival featured over 120 booksellers, educational exhibitors and related vendors. More than 35,000 people attended the Festival last year.
